| Want to see a great serve. Check out Roscoe Tanner on YouTube. Look at his toss if you have time to see it. He wastes no time letting it drop and therefore catches the ball at the Apex as the best servers always do. Also, see how power in the serve is measured as it relates to speed. Here is a great video of servers since 1919 just for a nice visual comparison, though it is missing Gonzales.
Great shots on youtube. Check it out. |

Here are some thoughts for getting started in tennis. How To Learn Tennis Net Play - Work on volleys, half volleys, and overheads to master the net. If you have only part of this triad of required skills, your opponents will be able to limit your effectiveness. Practice your volleys from the service line to improve your approach to the net. Often your first volley must be made from this depth in both singles and doubles. Stretch now or stretch later. (If you don't stretch prior to play, eventually you will get injured and will have to begin using heat pads, ice packs, and strengthening and stretching regimen necessary to recover quickly.) Federer is the best by many measures, but looking back over the past 100+ years of Tennis competition there has always been a claim that the current reigning champion is the best ever or as is now described, the G.O.A.T., or the greatest of all time. How do we measure this other than Tennis Grand Slam singles titles won? The numbers will forever be difficult for comparison since many great players didn't have the opportunity to compete in the open era thus limiting their title chances simply because they decided to play for higher compensation and forgo amateur trophies. If we judge by total Grand Slam Singles Wins Roger Federer is the best male player. Just for the record, Margaret Court is the best female player based on this measurement with 24 Grand Slams to her credit. Check out Tennis Statistics. Beyond this statistic there are many other things that we should consider as reasons to admire Roger Federer. His exemplary conduct is a credit to Tennis and his magical skills on the court achieved with classic strokes harken back to the beautiful styles of the past. He put to question the mantra that two handed backhands are superior to one handed backhands along with the current vogue of teaching Western Grips to junior players calling them superior to the Eastern Forehand grip. Federer is a model tennis player in every regard and it's our great fortune to have Nadal around as his rival. Rafael Nadal is now among the greats and his behavior is equally a credit to the game. Both men are gentlemen and deserve admiration for their skills in Tennis. Other Greats: The comment below was posted back in 2007 and of course the numbers have changed since then. Federer has passed Sampras in Majors and the Grand Slam seems to mean less today than just tallying up slams. One thing though, Laver's results should not be discounted for the argument that competition was less intense back in his time. Look back to see his competition and you'll see that he faced many of the greatest players of tennis including Roy Emerson, Ken Rosewall, John Newcombe, and a number of others that he faced in his long span of play. "BEST EVER TENNIS PLAYER - Rod Laver - My current favorite player is Federer based more on his style of play than his current superb results. His all court style is fun to watch and emulate. He may pass Laver in wins but Federer needs to get the grand slams to prove this. Remember, Laver had a number of years as a Pro back in the 1960's that he could have won more grand slams but was prevented from playing these amateur events. Once the rules changed, he won his second grand slam. " Watch the 1972 RodLaver Vs Ken Rosewall W.C.T.
